Robert H. Gilman, MD, DMD completed his residency in Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan in 1982. He was in private practice in Wellesley, Massachusetts for 31 years and taught in the Harvard Combined Residency Training Program in Plastic Surgery as a Clinical Instructor in Plastic Surgery at the Harvard Medical School. In 2013 he joined the full time faculty in Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan where he is a Clinical Associate Professor and Director of Aesthetic Surgery. He earned his MD at Boston University School of Medicine and earned his Dental degree, DMD, at Boston University School of Dentistry. He trained in Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in the Combined ENT Residency Program at Boston University and Tufts University. He is diplomat of both the American Board of Otolaryngology and the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Dr. Gilman has led a Pediatric Reconstructive team to Colombia, South America for the last 22 years and has taken 42 Michigan and Harvard residents with him over the years where he mentors them as the team provides surgical correction of deformities of the face, cleft lip and palate, burn scar contractures, and congenital deformities of the Hand. Through the University of Michigan President’s initiative and with the help of grateful donors, he has established the Robert H. Gilman, MD Fund for International Travel which provides financial assistance to University of Michigan plastic surgery residents enabling them to have the experience of international medical mission work.
Clinical Focus
In both his private practice and in his clinical teaching at Harvard and the University of Michigan, Dr. Gilman has focused on all aspects of cosmetic surgery. In particular he has an interest in rhinoplasty. He also focuses on facial rejuvenation procedures, both invasive and non-invasive, post pregnancy abdominal and breast surgery, aesthetic breast enlargement, post weight loss body reduction, body sculpturing by liposuction and fat transfer. As a member of the Michigan Plastic Surgery faculty, he continues to provide the highest quality of Plastic Surgical care for patients and continues the tradition of excellence in Plastic Surgery training for residents.
