Ethnic Rhinoplasty

What Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Previous rhinoplasty techniques did not always allow surgeons to retain the unique ethnic characteristics of the nose, but it is a much different story today. Ethnic rhinoplasty refers to nose reshaping procedures that create attractive outcomes while preserving the culturally distinct features of the nose. As a highly specialized surgery, ethnic rhinoplasty takes many years of advanced training and experience to master. Surgeons must understand what is perceived as beautiful based on the patient's ethnic background. Members of The Rhinoplasty Society are experienced in performing ethnic rhinoplasty procedures. You can locate a Rhinoplasty Society member who offers this service by using our Find A Surgeon feature.

Who Is a Candidate for Ethnic Rhinoplasty?

Ethnic rhinoplasty is primarily geared toward preserving the ethnic characteristics of non-Caucasian patients. You may be a good candidate for ethnic rhinoplasty if you are of African American, Middle Eastern, Latino, Asian, or mixed-race heritage. Not every ethnicity can be addressed through this procedure. Discussing your goals with an experienced surgeon is the best way to learn whether you're a candidate and the results that are possible.

How Is Ethnic Rhinoplasty Performed?

Since ethnic rhinoplasty is personalized based on the needs of each patient, the specifics of the surgery will differ. Generally, it takes 1 – 3 hours to complete. Various techniques will be used to enhance the nose structure and address cultural-specific concerns. Common adjustments include adding nasal tip definition, building dorsal height, augmenting the nasal dorsum, reducing nostril size and width, smoothing a nasal bump, and adding cartilage grafts. The procedure itself is complex and requires extra care to create the desired outcome based on the patient's goals and ethnic background.

About Us
Are there nonsurgical options to change my nose?

Yes, there are. If you want to smooth the appearance of lumps and bumps on your nose, a liquid rhinoplasty procedure that uses a dermal filler (like Juvéderm or Restylane) may be an option. An injectable filler can temporarily improve minor imperfections on your nose, which might help you decide if you want to proceed with ethnic rhinoplasty. Surgical procedures are better for long-lasting results, larger changes, and adjusting the internal structure of the nose for better function. At your consultation, your surgeon can let you know if you may be a candidate for liquid rhinoplasty.

Will I look different after ethnic rhinoplasty?

Yes, you will. Depending on your surgical plan and aesthetic goals, your surgeon will work to create your desired results that are dramatic, yet subtle enough to look natural. With ethnic rhinoplasty, your surgeon will achieve these results while maintaining your unique ethnic features.

Will they break my nose?

Not all ethnic rhinoplasties require your nose to be broken. Breaking the nose allows the surgeon to perform certain procedures that cannot be done without creating a fracture. Depending on what your aesthetic goals are, your nose may not need to be broken. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss all of your surgical options and which technique will help you achieve the best results.
